Whether you’re planning a company retreat, a painting course, sail training, a research project, or a unique vacation with friends and family, Sunbeam provides a remarkable way to experience the Stockholm archipelago. As a research vessel, Sunbeam offers diverse opportunities for exploration, and the Sunbeams Vänner (Sunbeam’s friends) association also organizes open events.
How to Get Involved
- Voyages and Events: Dates and locations for organized voyages are listed under ”Seglingskalender” (Sailing Calendar). Updates about new activities are posted under ”Aktiviteter” (Activities). You are most welcome to join us!
- Maintenance Assistance: If you’re interested in helping maintain the ship, email us at sunbeamsvanner@gmail.com. Dates for organized maintenance days are available in the ”Arbetskalender” (Work Calendar). There is always something to do and no previous shipyard experience is needed.
The Sunbeams vänner association acts as a contact point for individuals and organizations looking to organize tours or research projects aboard the Sunbeam.
A Ship with a Rich History
Originally built in Lowestoft, UK, as a sailing trawler, Sunbeam was sold to Sweden in the 1930s. After being fitted with an engine, she served as a fishing and cargo vessel. In 1962, the ship was acquired by the “Uppsala Marine Botanical Mediterranean Expedition” and has since been used for environmental research, courses, and leisure activities.
Facilities and Accommodations
The Sunbeam accommodates up to 12 passengers or 20–22 trainees. Sleeping arrangements include bunks for 12–14 guests, with options to sleep in tents, hammocks on deck, or nearby hotels and guesthouses. Onboard facilities include:
- A fully equipped kitchen
- Beds
- 2 WC
- A BBQ on deck
A small motorboat is also carried onboard and can be used for transportation, fishing, and exploring remote islands.
